Maplewood-Colonie Common School District
Acceptable Use Policy

The Maplewood-Colonie Common School District provides computer and Internet services to staff and students in order to enhance student learning.  The District is responsible for protecting its computer networks and hardware from unauthorized access and abuse.  Only authorized personnel shall be allowed to modify software, hardware, and the computer networks. Therefore the district requires all users (students, faculty, staff, and administration) to adhere to the following guidelines and policies when using district-owned computer resources.

The Interne

The District recognizes that the Internet provides a great learning resource for its students.  There are thousands of libraries, directories, and educational sites that students can explore with Internet access.  However, district staff, students, and parents should be aware that there is information on the Internet that may be illegal, defamatory, obscene, and offensive to some people.  The district has taken necessary precautions in an effort to prevent children from viewing this kind of material.  Software filters have been installed and students will not use the Internet without direct adult supervision.  However, please be aware there is always a risk that students will view inappropriate content despite these precautions.

 

Prohibited Activities

  1. Downloading information or programs on to the district computers
  2. Modifying computer programs
  3. Destroying material of another user
  4. Uploading or creating computer viruses
  5. Harassing others by e-mail or other methods
  6. Installing software, programs, and/ or devices on school computers without the permission of a school administrator
  7. Attempting to access illegal or inappropriate content on the Internet

 

E-Mail

  1. Students may not use e-mail without the permission of a school administrator
  2. Staff may access personal e-mail if the hardware in use is not in demand by another staff member or student pursuing a school-related project

 

Consequences of Violation of this Agreement will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Loss of school computer privileges
  2. Detention
  3. Suspension
  4. Monetary compensation for damages
  5. Other school penalties as appropriate
  6. Civil or criminal proceedings as necessary
