About Maplewood School
Maplewood-Colonie Common School consists of grades K-8.  It is located in the small hamlet of Maplewood in the Town of Colonie.  Maplewood is a small community bordered by the city of Cohoes to the north, the city of Watervliet to the south, the village of Green Island to the east and the village of Latham to the west.
Maplewood School is the center of learning for the children of Maplewood as well as children of families stationed at the Watervliet Arsenal.  Also, many parents in other area communities choose to send their children to Maplewood due to its small size and  reputation for providing a quality education to students in a safe and compassionate learning environment.
Some of the special features that make Maplewood School a great place to learn are:

  • Caring and supportive teachers and staff

  • Full day kindergarten

  • Russian language instruction for grades 1-8

  • Cooperation with Gymnasium #1, our sister school in Tula, Russia

  • Early Literacy Program to promote reading in grades K-3

School History
Maplewood School has been in existence since before 1897.  It was originally a one-room school, although an addition of another classroom was added in the early 1900s.  However, tragedy struck in 1921 when a horrible fire destroyed the school.

Construction on a new Maplewood School building soon began, and the existing building opened in 1924.  The school served students in grades 1-8 with a staff of 13.

Over time, the school has grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of its students and the community.  Today, Maplewood School is a K-8 school that has developed a reputation for excellence in education.  Maplewood has a student body of approximately 185 students and approximately 30 faculty and staff members.  Maplewood School continues to be a source of pride and achievement for its students and the Maplewood community.
